Fixing a leaky pipe without replacing it is possible, but requires some materials and skills. When done correctly, this procedure will save you money by not having to purchase new pipes.
Of course, this process will not work if the fracture in the pipe is very large.
If you are considering repairing your leaky pipe instead of replacing it, read more about how to do so below!
The steps to repairing a leaky pipe are:
- Purchase plumbing epoxy putty.
- Turn off the main water line to turn off the water source to the house (and your broken pipe)
- Make sure the pipe around the broken section is dry.
- But, just in case, have a bucket or towel handy to place under the pipe.
- Clean up the area around the leak to make sure that nothing blocks your work space.
- Put on latex gloves.
- Mix the plumbing epoxy putty with your hands until it’s a paste (like Silly Putty). Normally, when it turns grey – it’s ready to be used.
- Wrap that putty around the broken area of the pipe. Make sure that it covers not only the fracture in the pipe but also at least 1/2 inch around that area. In other words, spread it but make sure that the putty is also about 1/2 inch thick as well.
- Wrap plumbing tape around the edges of the putty to seal those edges onto the pipe.
- Let the putty set for 10 – 15 minutes.
- Turn your water back on.
If these steps seem too difficult, we recommend hiring a professional to do the job.
CAUTION: This is a temporary fix – there is no magical way to completely repair a broken pipe without replacing it so know that this is only temporary. We recommend that you get a plumber in to properly fix it as soon as possible.
