If you ever go in the shower and go in for a few minutes, you will hear a shrill, squeaky noise coming from your showerhead. If you take a shower one morning and hear this noise, it means you are facing a long, hot shower with lots of hot water and lots of squeaking.

There are several reasons that may be causing your shower to whistle.

1. When the pipes are clogged with mineral deposits, water makes a whistle while it’s trying to squeeze through a smaller pipe. If this is the cause of the noise, removing the clogging in your shower head will fix the problem. If the problems persist after the shower heads are cleaned with this method, it may be sediment in the shower head. However, if it is clogged only with mineral deposits, not sediments, an alternative method could be easier and faster, but it means removing the shower heads

2. Mineral deposits could also have collected in your shower head. If this is the issue then you need to remove your shower head and clean it. See below for the simple steps on how to remove mineral deposits from your shower head.

3. The squeak that your shower makes is due to the build-up of water pressure in the pipe, which is caused by friction when water flows through the curves of the pipes. You can adjust the water pressure at the main shut off valve for your house and simply lowering it may solve the issue for you.

4. Some valves wear out naturally, allowing water to leak out, causing the whistling you may hear. Replacing the valves in your shower’s plumbing system would be the solution.

5. Another component that may be causing that whistling sound is the shower cartridge. The solution here is to replace it and unless you are quite handy, we recommend that you have a plumber do the job for you.

6. If your shower is combined with a bathtub, a device that may be causing that whistling is the diverter valve. This is the pull handle that you use when you want the water to come out of the shower head instead of the bathtub faucet. Replacing this would be the answer to solving your noisy problem.

Of course, it could also be any combination of these.

How Do You Remove Mineral Deposits From A Shower Head?

If your water comes from a well – we recommend the Vinegar and Baking soda recipe to remove mineral deposits.

Here’s the recipe and procedure:

Pour a pot of boiling hot water down the drain.

Pour 1/2 cup baking soda down the drain. Wait a few minutes.

Pour 1 cup of Distilled White Vinegar and 1 cup very hot water down the drain.

Cover the drain with a plug to keep the reaction from foaming out of the drain.

Pour a pot of hot boiling water down the drain to flush everything out.

Repeat this process for every sink drain, shower drain and bathtub drain in your home.
