Like most plumbing problems, a gurgling sound coming from your sink should not be ignored, even if it only lasts for a minute or so. It’s a sign of a bigger problem and one that needs to be addressed before the damage gets bigger and the cost to fix it gets bigger too.
Is that gurgling coming from just one drain? Is it coming from multiple drains? Did it just start or has it been going on for a while and is it getting worse?
The answers to these questions will help you (and your plumber) figure out what the cause may be and how to fix it.
Why Does My Bathroom Sink Make A Gurgling Noise?
If you’re hearing a gurgling sound coming from your bathroom sink, most likely the problem is that are is somehow getting into your drain pipes. How did this happen?
Well, it’s probably your sewer vent system. There could be a blockage, or the vent could have been installed incorrectly or some other issue – but we recommend that you check (or have a plumber check) your sewer venting system.
If you’re hearing that gurgling sound just from one sink then the problem could simply be in your sink vent. But if it’s coming from multiple sinks or if you are experiencing some other problems (like the ones that we list below) then these are all signs that there’s a problem somewhere throughout the entire venting system.
Other Signs That Your Sewer Vents Are Blocked
Besides that gurgling sound, there are 2 other signs that let you know there’s a blockage (or a problem) somewhere in your sewer venting system:
- Water in your sinks are draining slowly.
- You smell sewer odors
- Your toilet is flushing slowly
What To Do About That Gurgling Sound?
Sewer vents are located on the roof of your house. They allow the gases that build up in your sewer system to escape into the air so that you don’t have that awful sewer smell in your home.
We highly recommend that you get this issue assessed and fixed by a professional plumber. Climbing around your roof trying to fix a sewer vent is not something that the majority of homeowners are equipped to do safely or even correctly.
